WHEREAS our region is in the midst of a climate crisis and public transportation is a powerful tool in the fight to reduce carbon emissions from transportation;
AND WHEREAS making public transit fare-free for youth will improve equity and allow more youth and families to have access to public transportation, lower transportation costs, and improved quality of life;
AND WHEREAS providing access to public transit to children and youth at an early age can instill positive lifelong habits of sustainable public transportation use;
AND WHEREAS the City of Victoria has implemented fare-free public transit for youth and all youth in the region should have equal access to public transportation without financial barriers;
THEREFORE, WE THE UNDERSIGNED, call on municipal councils across the Capital Region and the Victoria Regional Transit Commission to immediately implement fare-free public transit for all youth in the region under the age of 19.
